Move a Project's Config to Your Repository

Keep your workflows next to your code, review changes as pull requests, and let your repository rules decide who approves them.

By default, Shipfox stores your workflows for you. This guide moves them into one of your GitHub repositories. After the move:

  • Your workflows live in the same repository as your code.
  • You change them with pull requests, like your code.
  • Your repository rules decide who can approve a change.

Shipfox opens a pull request that adds the .shipfox/ folder to your repository. When you merge it, the move is complete.

You cannot undo a move. Once Shipfox opens the pull request, the project belongs to that repository.

Before you begin

You need:

  • A project that shows Managed by Shipfox at the top of its Automations page.
  • A GitHub repository that Shipfox can access. If your repository is not listed, connect GitHub or give Shipfox access to it.
  • Someone who can merge pull requests in that repository.

The repository must also:

  • Have at least one commit.
  • Have no .shipfox/ folder yet.
  • Not be used by another Shipfox project.

If one of these is not true, Shipfox tells you when you select the repository.

Move the project

Start the move

Open the project and select Automations. At the top of the page, select Move to your repository.

Select the repository

If you connected GitHub more than once, first choose the account. Then search for the repository and select it.

Shipfox checks the repository right away. If there is a problem, Shipfox shows the reason and you cannot continue. Fix the problem or select another repository.

Confirm

Shipfox shows you the repository and the number of files it will add. If the repository is public, Shipfox tells you, because anyone can then read your workflows. Select Move to followed by the repository name.

Shipfox opens the pull request. From this moment, the project belongs to the repository.

If the project's .shipfox/ folder is empty, there is nothing to add. The move completes at once, with no pull request.

Merge the pull request

Until you merge, the Automations page shows Waiting for merge with a link to the pull request. Your workflows keep running as before. You cannot change them until the merge.

Review the pull request and merge it in GitHub. Edits to the files in the pull request are fine. Shipfox uses what you merge.

After the merge, nothing changes for your workflows. They keep their schedules, their triggers, and their run numbers. From now on, you change them with pull requests in your repository.

Verify the move

  1. Open the project's Automations page. The top of the page shows the repository name and Synced.
  2. Open the Files tab. You see the .shipfox/ folder from your repository.
  3. Open the Workflows tab. Your workflows are still there, with their run history.

If you see Failed instead of Synced, use Find why a workflow did not sync.

If the move stops

Sometimes Shipfox cannot finish the move, for example when GitHub does not answer. The Automations page then shows Move stopped.

Select Retry. Shipfox continues the same move. It never opens a second pull request.

If Shipfox shows an error instead, for example a missing permission, the project stays as it was. Fix the problem and start the move again.

If the pull request is closed without a merge

The project still belongs to the repository, and your workflows keep running as before. The Automations page shows Pull request closed.

Select Open a new pull request. Shipfox opens a new one with the same files. Reopening the closed pull request in GitHub works too.
